Myths About Sun Screen and Sun Block

Posted on: November 5, 2010

We are often misled about what sunscreen and sun block can do and even more what it cannot do. Weaving your way through the glut of information that is both accurate and inaccurate is time consuming and can also be annoying. Here are some of the most common myths about sun screen and sun block.

You do not need it in the winter

Nothing could be further from the truth. Any time that you are exposed to the sun, your skin is exposed to UVB rays. These rays can cause long term damage, especially for those who spend a lot of time out of doors. In the summer, we tend to swim, go to the beach, sit outside for cookouts and participate in other outdoor activities. These activities change in the winter, and may include snowboarding, skiing and skating. Either way, your skin is exposed to the same rays and in some cases they may be even stronger in the winter time.

Adults do not need sun screen or sun block as much as children

This is patently false. While it is true that children should be protected with a stronger SPF strength sun block or sun screen, adults must have their skin protected as well. Today in fact, more adults are spending even more time out of doors than they did when they were younger. Some of this is in direct proportion to the fact that we live longer than ever before.

Controversy over Vitamin D

There have been several reports that claim that using sun screen and sun block causes Vitamin D deficiency. While the controversy continues, it is not harmful to add slightly more foods into your diet that contain Vitamin D if you are concerned about this.

Sun screen and sun blocks are oily

Sun screens and sun blocks today are available in a wide variety of options. While there are oil based products, many are available water based. For women, there are also cosmetics that contain sun screens and sun blocks that can help stop the layered feeling.

Summary

There are many top brand cosmetic companies and skin care companies who make excellent sun blocks and sun screens. Don't risk the health of your skin by not using a proper sun block or sun screen. Find the formula that works best for you and protect yourself from the elements. Thanks for visiting Face Sunblock.
